ISO 14001:2004

We must care for the environment where we live in. There is now a general awareness about environmental issues. Due to the rapid industrialization the environmental issues are becoming worse. Developed countries have realized this and now taking steps to curtail environmental hazards. One of the measures organizations are taking lately is the ISO 14001:2004 certification.

Recognized as the 'Environmental Management System' or just 'EMS', ISO 14001:2004 is a part of the 14000 series of international standards from International Organizations for Standardization (ISO). There are 2 standards in the series: ISO 14001:2004 (Environmental management systems - Specification with guidance for use) and ISO 14004:2004 (Environmental management systems - General guidelines on principles, systems and supporting techniques). Only the ISO 14001:2004 is applicable for certification.

The other standards of the ISO 14000 series supplements and supports ISO 14001 and ISO 14004, providing guidance on:

  • Environmental Auditing :- ISO 14010; 14011; and 14012
  • Environmental Labels and Declarations :- ISO 14020; 14021; and 14024
  • Environmental Performance Evaluation :- ISO 14031
  • Life Cycle Assessment :- ISO 14040; 14041; 14042; and 14043
  • Environmental Terms and Definitions :- ISO 14050
